Storyline

The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Yukiya Amano, said today (3 June) that in the absence of cooperation from Iran, he could not confirm that the country’s nuclear activities are peaceful.

Amano told a meeting of the IAEA board of governors, “Iran is not providing the necessary cooperation to enable us to provide credible assurance about the absence of undeclared nuclear material and activities. The agency therefore cannot conclude that all nuclear material in Iran is in peaceful activities.

He also called on the Democratic People’s Republic of North Korea (DPRK) to comply with the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

He said, “I reiterate my call for the DPRK to fully comply with then NPT and to cooperate completely and fully with the agency."

He also announced that this year’s IAEA Scientific Forum in September will focus on protecting the coastal and marine environment.

Amano provided an update on the IAEA's post-Fukushima activities, which include a comprehensive Agency report on the Fukushima Daiichi accident that will be finalised by the end of 2014.

The 35-nation Board is meeting to discuss the IAEA's work on nuclear verification, safety, security and the peaceful use of nuclear technologies. The Board, which meets five times a year at the IAEA headquarters in Vienna, Austria, is one of the IAEA's main policymaking bodies.
