2. SOUNDBITE (English) Dr. Claudia Garcia-Moreno, WHO:
“This report brings together for the first time data on the prevalence of different forms of violence against women and it shows that the problem is widespread and it is unacceptably high. One in three women globally are affected by either physical or sexual violence from a partner or sexual violence by a non-partner.”

4. SOUNDBITE (English) Dr. Claudia Garcia-Moreno, WHO:
“So these figures on violence against women are a wake-up call to all of us that this is an urgent problem that needs action. The health sector is only one of many sectors that need to take action, but it has an important role to play by identifying women early and providing them with support that can help mitigate the consequences and also contribute to prevention. They also have an important role to play in advocating for other sectors to take action so that together we can reach a time when no woman is exposed to this violence.”

6. SOUNDBITE (English) Dr. Claudia Garcia-Moreno, WHO:
“So the main message of the report is that violence against women is a global problem that it is widespread and that it occurs in all regions at unacceptably high level.”

Storyline

Physical or sexual violence is a public health problem that affects more than one third of all women globally, according to a new report released by the World Health Organization (WHO) in partnership with the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and the South African Medical Research Council.

The report, Global and regional estimates of violence against women: Prevalence and health effects of intimate partner violence and non-partner sexual violence, represents the first systematic study of global data on the prevalence of violence against women – both by partners and non-partners. Some 35 per cent of all women will experience either intimate partner or non-partner violence.

The study finds that intimate partner violence is the most common type of violence against women, affecting 30 per cent of women worldwide.

The study highlights the need for all sectors to engage in eliminating tolerance for violence against women and better support women who experience it. New WHO guidelines, launched with the report, aim to help countries improve their health sector’s capacity to respond to violence against women.

Dr. Claudia Garcia-Moreno, a WHO specialist in the area, said, "this report bring together for the first time data on the prevalence of different forms of violence against women and it shows that the problem is widespread and it is unacceptably high. One in three women globally are affected by either physical or sexual violence from a partner or sexual violence by a non-partner.”

Garcia-Moreno said,” so these figures on violence against women are a wake-up call to all of us. That this is an urgent problem that needs action.

Garcia-Moreno said, “so the main message of the report is that violence against women is a global problem that it is widespread and that it occurs in all regions at unacceptably high level.”
