6. SOUNDBITE: (English) Gerry Rice, IMF spokesman:
“Our work with the Egyptians is producing increased understanding on many of the remaining issues. Our goal remains to bring the discussions with the Egyptian authorities to a speedy and successful conclusion on a national economic program that will support growth, jobs and stability and that could be supported by the IMF. We’re working constructively with the authorities toward concluding negotiations on a Standby Arrangement. We look forward to the resolution of remaining technical issues.”

In its regular briefing, the IMF today (20 June) welcomed Italy’s new growth measures. The measures provide 3 billion Euros a year for public works programs in 2013, which could create an estimated 30,000 temporary construction jobs.
“We do welcome the package announced last week by the authorities in particular the measures to support investment and streamline the judicial system. We support the government’s intention of adhering to its fiscal commitments to the EU. As we’ve said in the past here, the structural reform agenda is also very important for Italy going forward,” said IMF spokesman Gerry Rice.
On Pakistan, Rice said that a mission has arrived to discuss the country’s economic outlook with the government. He added that the authorities have not requested a program from the IMF.
“A mission arrived in Islamabad yesterday to begin the annual Article IV consultations and discussions with the authorities lasting about two weeks as is the norm. We will issue a statement at the end of that. On the program, there has been no formal request for a program at this point,” Rice said.
On Egypt, Rice said that the IMF continues working with Egypt on the remaining technical issues toward a program.
“Our work with the Egyptians is producing increased understanding on many of the remaining issues. Our goal remains to bring the discussions with the Egyptian authorities to a speedy and successful conclusion on a national economic program that will support growth, jobs and stability and that could be supported by the IMF.
