Storyline

Australia argued today at the international Court of Justice in the hague, Netherlands that Japan's whaling program was is in breach of obligations assumed by Japan under the International Convention for the Regulation of Whaling ('ICRW'), as well as its other international obligations for the preservation of marine mammals and the marine environment.

Australia initiated its legal action at the United Nations court in 2010, noting that more than 10,000 whales had been killed since 1988 as a result of Japan's research programs.

Meanwhile New Zealand, which had been granted permission to intervene, will offer its anti-whaling "observations" the following Monday (1 July).
