New and sometimes tumultuous challenges are constantly emerging in our rapidly evolving world: whether it is climate change, or global terrorist movement, issues related to migration in the modern world; threats to freedom of expression and invasion of privacy in cyberspace; or unforeseen economic and financial crises affecting many countries across the planet.”

"Most of the fundamentals I believe are in place. The problems are more to do with implementation, with political will, and with the deployment of sufficient human and financial resources. There is also the question of how to use what we already have at our disposal, in the light of new technologies."

An International conference on human rights concluded today (28 June) with delegates charged with more responsibility to ensure human rights ideals are upheld.
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay in her closing remarks, said: "Human rights can, and should, be the bedrock of moral and legal stability, keeping us firmly rooted in civilised behaviour during this exciting, but also frightening and extremely powerful whirlwind of change."
The two-day conference saw human rights experts drawn from various countries rejuvenate on human rights ideals and take stock on promises made in a similar conference, 20 years ago - during the World Conference on Human Rights held in Vienna. The just concluded conference was titled: "Vienna+20 Advancing the Protection of Human Rights."
The High Commissioner in her closing remarks addressed emerging human rights challenges such as migration, climate change, corruption and economic mismanagement which has led to financial disaster for many individuals.
Pillay said “most of the fundamentals are in place. The problems are more to do with implementation, political will, and the deployment of sufficient human and financial resources. There is also the question of how to use what we already have at our disposal in the light of new technologies, continuing globalisation, new social behaviours and other rapidly evolving phenomena."
The conference adopted a forward looking approach. The High Commissioner for Human Rights emphasised that it is vital to maintain the momentum and path laid out in the Vienna Declaration and Programme of Action of 20 years ago.
She expressed gratitude to the Austrian government which hosted the conference.
The final outcome of deliberations by the delegates will be published into a book.
