"My name is Miles Vernon. I am United Nations Movement Control Officer. I've been in this mission in Mali since February 1st 2013 where I flew in on MI26 helicopter."

"I've been doing this now roughly 21 year. I am excited to see a peace, everlasting peace taking place here in Mali. Its been a ride. Met me different cultures, worked with nationalities I never dreamed of as a child didn't even know it existed."

"Movement Control is a specialty within the United Nations that specializes in troop rotation, the strategic movements of troops deployment of troops, responsible for internal movement of passengers and cargo within and without mission area. So it's very diverse. All incoming and outgoing shipments for the mission, all these are under Movement Control."

"If you going to a mission where there is no footprint on the ground and you have to establish from the row beginning - that can be quite challenging. And sometimes can be very difficult to settle in, if you will."

"Every place I served it was different. And being here in Mali is much different from being in Cote d'Ivoire, or lets go back to those old days, from being in Zagreb, Croatia and so. I can't really put a hand on it, I have places where I served and really enjoyed, but all of them have been special and unique."

"I had this concept, that the conditions we work in, I guess we need a big welfare and I would be the guy to get people involved in different settings and I enjoyed that over the years."

"The drive to see change; to be a special part; to do something different in the day that I didn't do before, so that kind of keep me going. When I wake up now I try to do whatever I can do in a day to make a difference. I think that's the key thing. That's what keeps me going. The idea of making a difference, that's what I live by. Each day that I live I pray to make a difference either in my own life or somebody else's life by the word or the deed."
