At a ceremony in Bamako, Mali today (1 July) United Nations peacekeepers took over the command from the African Union (AU) mission in the West African nation.
The official change of power ceremony took place in the presence of representatives of the international community. From now on the Blue Helmets are officially in charge of keeping peace in Mali.

The current peacekeeping force in Mali is 6,000 strong, and will grow to more than 12,000 troops on the ground.
