Storyline

The Codex Alimentarius Commission - the world’s top food standard body for consumer protection and trade - is celebrating its 50th anniversary.

Established in 1963 by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO), the Commission develops harmonized international food standards, guidelines and codes of practice to protect the health of the consumers and ensure fair practices in the food trade.

Farmers Shravani Devi Pachar and her husband Om Prakash have probably never have heard of Codex. But they are leading healthier and happier lives because they decided to follow Indian organic standards derived from Codex organics guidelines.

SOUNDBITE (Rajasthani) Shravani Devi Pachar, Organic Farmer:
“When we started doing organic agriculture, we were the only ones in the area. People would laugh at us. But after the first harvest we saw some improvement. Then the yields got even better the year after. And now the people who were laughing at us are saying you have done a good job!”

The couple has been refining their methods for 15 years. They use crop residue to feed their animals. And animal waste to fertilize the fields. Their irrigation system is run on renewable energy. And their hard work is paying off, with better yields, a healthier environment and new marketing opportunities.

SOUNDBITE (English) Vijay Deep Singh, Foundation for promotion of organic farming
“Now Codex, it’s surprising to say, is becoming the base for the improvement and the sustainability of the farmer. How? They are following the standards defined for the harvesting, ploughing, watering for the crops. Because of the Codex now they know those standards. So any company, organic or conventional, can buy their products for a higher rate.”

Since changing their farming methods, their standard of living has been transformed.

SOUNDBITE (Rajasthani) Shravani Devi Pachar, Organic Farmer:
“Things improved a lot with organic agriculture. Before we were living in a hut, now we are living in a house with many rooms. We were in misery; we didn’t have a single penny. But now, because of organic agriculture, we have many animals. Our son and daughter are married. We have jewellery, we built a house. And it’s all because of our crops.”

Shravani is just one of more than 200,000 certified organic farmers whose products are packaged in local factories before distribution to shops in India and abroad.

With approximately 2.5 million hectares of land under certification, organic farming here in India looks set for a positive future.
