10. SOUNDBITE (English) Ambassador Vitaly Churkin, Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the United Nations:
“Now we have something which looks like a promising process, unfortunately the process was derailed when the Syrian Government invited this investigation of the Khan Al-Asal in the first place because what they were confronted with –this is my understanding of the predicament- was essentially the replica of Iraq investigation and they didn’t want to repeat the same experience, the situation was completely different, so now I hope that on both sides there is going to be reasonable kind of an attitude and effort to clarify this matter.”

In a statement issued yesterday by Ban Ki-moon’s spokesperson he welcomed “the offer of the Government of Syria to continue discussions on the United Nations Mission to Investigate Allegations of the Use of Chemical Weapons in the Syrian Arab Republic,” According to the statement, the head of the Mission, Åke Sellström, would travel to New York this week to update the Secretary-General on the status of his activities.
