Storyline

As South Sudanese citizens brace themselves to celebrate Martyrs day on Tuesday (July 30) a day that recognizes those that fought and died during decades of war, citizens still await for news of the naming of a new cabinet.

Just over a week ago on July 23, South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir Mayardit, dissolved the government in a televised statement on National State Television and issued decrees to this effect.

The decree dismissed Vice-President Riek Machart, as well as 29 national ministers and their deputies from office with immediate effect.

A decree was also issued suspending the Secretary General of the SPLM party who is also the lead negotiator of talks between Sudan and South Sudan, Pagan Amum.

Riek Machar remains the deputy chairperson of the SPLM.

Since, Salva Kiir over the weekend appointed former Information Minister as the country’s Foreign Minister.

The new cabinet will be composed of 19 ministers.

President Kiir is expected to address a public gathering during Martyr’s day.
