Fatima Aliyu, a single mother of two, has dedicated herself to ensuring that all children Nigeria’s Sokoto State are immunized against polio.
It’s a cause closer to her heart. She, like many of her neighbours, fell victim to the disease as a child and she now walks with the aid of crutches.

Nigeria is one of a handful of countries were polio is still endemic. Across the country people like Fatima, with UNICEF’s support, are helping to ensure that children are vaccinated and to reassure parents who have concerns.

Polio survivors are active in key states in the north of the country, working tirelessly to ensure that every child is reached with the vaccine, and that Nigeria achieves its goal of becoming polio free.
