Storyline

The United States (US)government donated $270,000 worth of safety equipment today to the South Sudan National Police Service.

The State Department, through its bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) gave handheld radios, tents, tactical and safety equipment to the units that handle diplomatic security, livestock and highway patrol units.

SOUNDBITE (English) Susan Page, U.S. Ambassador to South Sudan:
“To the police officers here today and throughout South Sudan, I appreciate the work that you do. I know your job is not easy and that you face a lot of challenges, including lack of resources. I hope the equipment we provide you here today will allow you to perform your job more safely and effectively. This essential equipment will strengthen the Police Service’s ability to mobilize and respond to incidents affecting the diplomatic community, to deploy to the field in a safer, healthier manner and to more easily communicate and respond to highway incidents.”

The INL assistance program in South Sudan is the single largest assistance program in Sub-Sahara Africa and is used to fund UNPOL Advisors, who have been training SSPS officers and helping them to create a registry of all SSPS Officers with a view of strengthening the Service.

Tackling incidents of highway violence, cattle rustling and the need to protect foreign diplomats is important to the government of South Sudan.

SOUNDBITE (English) H.E. Lt. Gen. Aleu Ayieny Aleu – Minister of Interior:
“As a young nation just out from the war, such a contribution towards the security of our country is invaluable and will provide our Security Forces with the confidence they need. It will provide our Security Forces with necessary tools that will make them effective in carrying out their assigned tasks and responsibilities.”

The equipment which is badly needed for the under funded police service will be sorted out and deployed to the relevant units to help in their crime fighting and protection duties.

The US government is the leading international donor to South Sudan and has invested over (USD) $28 million dollars in the country to promote law and order.
