Storyline

She is called the “index child”, the first victim in a polio outbreak that has been gripping Kenya since May.

SOUNDBITE (Somali) Mad Ahmed, mother of Fatuma:
“One night she started having a fever, and also vomiting. We went to the health post, and the doctors took her to the main hospital in Hagadera. Then she was paralyzed. They checked the stool and told us it was polio.”

Following Fatuma’s diagnosis, more polio cases have been confirmed, and the majority of them are from the Somali refugee camps in Dadaab.

The outbreak no only affects children, but also adults. Among them, is 19 year old Awil, who has never been immunized against polio before.

To contain the outbreak, immunization campaigns have been conducted around the country.

The efforts are especially intensified in and around the refugee camps where the population’s immunities are low. From children to adults, everyone here is set to be vaccinated against polio.

SOUNDBITE (English) Wardah Rashid, vaccination team supervisor:
“Round one we had a little bit challenge. One of them was resistance from the community. But with the recurrent campaigns that we have been doing up to round four, the challenge has reduced. It is also because there is so much sensitization both in the radio, the Dadaab FM Radio, and our mobile mobilization team.”

Today Dadaab FM is hosting a special live show. Imam Mohamed, together with experts from WHO and UNHCR, is here to talk about polio and answer questions from the listeners.

SOUNDBITE (Somali), Abdinoor Mohamed, Imam:
“As a religious leader, it is my responsibility to tell the community what is right and what is wrong. So it is my responsibility to give them the right information about polio and how to fight the disease through immunization.”

With more than 100 cases reported first in Somalia, then Kenya and lately Ethiopia, the once polio free Horn of Africa is now faced with a major crisis.

Years of conflict and insecurity have created a large number of un-immunized children. An estimated one million of them are extremely vulnerable to polio, and they will remain so until they are reached.
