Storyline

One cannot tell it now, but on normal days, this flooded road is dry and dusty.

With no alternative paths to go through because of heavy rains, residents of Wondruk have to brave flood waters to get onto the other side.

This lone woman waded through flood waters which collected along this walk way, only to be saved from drowning, by a lone policeman on patrol in the area. She waded through the water, following others who had gone the same path, but she was overwhelmed by the water.

SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Santino Deng, Policeman:
“This place takes a lot of people many people had been taken in this place, and there are houses across there if we go now, you will find people are really suffering whenever they come here to cross, the water takes them.”

Over the last couple of months, thousands of families across South Sudan have been affected by torrential rains. Their homes and crops have been destroyed, and some have fallen ill due to water borne diseases or malaria passed on by mosquitoes which breed in stagnant waters.

SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Atem Ghor Deng, Resident of Wonduk
“As you can see water has destroyed houses and you can see my children are moving on water, they sleep outside these days even no shelter and mosquito biting them.”

Heavy rains have been pounding vast areas of South Sudan for the last three months flooding various towns and destroying homesteads across the country and this resulted to the president setting up a taskforce comprised of nine government ministers, aimed at mapping out flood affected areas to ascertain the magnitude of the flooding.

SOUNDBITE (English) Former Commissioner of Twic County, Malek Ring Makuei:
“Disaster of Twich County which is affected by the flood of rain, make a disaster to all villages especially the Bomas.”

“When rain comes I don’t sleep fully, I sleep with one ear if I hear something I just walk out thinking that maybe the house will fall on me. Because you see that house fell down and all the utensils are inside.”

With roads flooding, different paths have to be sought. Driving through much of the area is difficult for lots of vehicles.

The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) is assisting local authorities in areas affected by widespread flooding and torrential rains. In Northern Bahr el Ghazal and Warrap states, UNMISS provided helicopters flights for states’ local authorities and ministries to carry out their own needs assessments over portions of the main Aweil-Gok Macher highway washed away by heavy rainfalls. UNMISS and the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) is currently looking at ways to release excavators for local authorities to carry out repairs with adequate equipment.

SOUNDBITE (English) Boma Authority Luka Kuot Jak Lual:
“It is national flood it actually destroyed all villages and crops and even animals were evacuated all villages were evacuated.”
