Heavy rains have been pounding vast areas of South Sudan for the last three months, flooding various towns and destroying homesteads across the country. The president is setting up a taskforce comprised of nine government ministers, aimed at mapping out flood affected areas to ascertain the magnitude of the flooding.

“On Friday the 6th of September 2013 the Task Force submitted its report to the council of ministers for your Government. The Report shows that approximately 37,238 households which is equivalent to a total of 223,430 people are affected.”

The flooding has affected six States in the Country; Northern Bahr el Ghazal, Unity, Upper Nile, Warrap, Western Bahr el Ghazal and Lakes States where rivers have burst their banks and flooded homesteads and roads.

South Sudan’s rainy season last lasts six to seven months, but this year the rains have been quite heavy, and this has led to a loss of crop, damaged an already weak infrastructure and damaged and submerged numerous homes in the affected areas.

“Indeed, Hydro metrological readings indicate a steady rise in water, in water levels and rain fall. Meaning that flooding may increase or remain stagnant on the ground for a relatively long period.”

Meanwhile, the United Nations has been assisting local authorities in areas affected by widespread flooding and recent torrential rains – for example in Bor, Jonglei State, the South Korean Engineering Company have built dikes along the river Nile. Equipped with excavators and oil pressure cranes they fortified the banks of the Nile to deter further floods and contain rising waters.
