“We believe that it is something that is working very pragmatically and strongly in support of this effort for the elimination of chemical weapons in Syria in support of the role, very important role that is going to be played in that work by the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, and we are sure that this is something which is given a good support for this work which will need to be undertaken by the Syrians, by the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, by the United Nations, and by all interested parties which are going to be contributing to this process.”
15. Cutaway, journalist taking notes
16. SOUNDBITE (English) Samantha Power, Permanent Representative of the United States to the United Nations:
“Tonight we have a shared draft resolution which is the outcome of intense diplomacy and consultations over the past few weeks. Our overarching goal was for the rapid and total elimination of Syria’s chemical weapons programme. This is a class of weapon that the world has already judged to be banned because it is simply too horrific. This is a fundamental belief shared by the United States, all members of the Security Council and 98 percent of the world. Tonight the Council discussed a draft that will uphold this international norm by imposing legally binding obligations on Syria, on the Government, to eliminate this chemical weapons programme.”
17. Cutaway, journalist taking notes
18. SOUNDBITE (English) Mark Lyall Grant, Permanent Representative of the United Kingdom to the United Nations:
“What this resolution does do is for the first time in many months it brings together a message of unity of the Security Council and for that it was worth making some compromises.”
19. Cutaway, journalist taking notes
20. Wide shot, Grant walks away from the microphone
