United Nations Security Council members arrived yesterday (06 October) in Goma capital of North Kivu province, Democratic Republic of the Congo where they will be on three day visit. Their first stop was in Kinshasa where the ambassadors met with President Joseph Kabila before traveling to Goma.
In Goma, the delegation visited the Kibati village, an area once occupied by the M23 rebels and now under the control of the Congolese army (FARDC)
Talking to journalists at the village, Congolese Army (FARDC) General Bauma Kambamba Luciel who was accompanying the delegation said that the M23 was, “still recruiting, training and killing the civilian population and also abducting people in the positions they’re occupying.”
Later on the Council mission met with the governor of North Kivu, members of the civil society and also visited Mugunga IDP camp for internally displaced persons.
In the camp they also had a chance to hear from villagers expressing their frustrations with the political process, the regional violence and their needs go back to their normal lives.
The delegation then left to Kigali, Rwanda to meet with Rwandan President Paul Kagame.
The delegation's will also travel to Uganda, where they plan to meet with President Yoweri Museveni in the capital Entebbe.
The last leg of the visit will be to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where the delegation will meet with Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn and with the African Union Peace and Security Council.
The UN Security Council members are visiting the Great Lakes Region of Africa to showcase their support and commitment for a UN-brokered peace accord for the strife-torn area.
