“The studies from FAO, FIDA and PMA indicate that the number of persons that suffer hunger and malnutrition is reducing, but that there are efforts being carried out to deploy strategies and state politics. 842 million human beings in the planet still lack food, there are malnourished and can’t afford a healthy lifestyle. The figure continues to be overwhelming which also makes the food waste from the developing world even more unacceptable. The most encouraging results are being achieved where agricultural, educational and nutritional, productive infrastructure, home clean-up programs, as well as food for all ages and life stages programs are being articulated.”

Its not only about responding to the immediate emergencies, but to face together, in all fields, a problem that questions our own and the social conscience to achieve a just and lasting solution.”

Better food systems are required in order to defeat hunger and malnutrition around the globe was the key message coming from the observance of World Food Day at FAO headquarters in Rome today (16 October).

FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva told the ceremony, attended by government ministers, diplomats, heads of UN agencies and other dignitaries that, World Food day offered everyone every year “an opportunity to adopt instruments and solutions that allow us to move ahead towards a world without hunger and with adequate nutrition.”

While asking all countries to upgrade and widen their understanding of the hunger problem, he said “We think about hunger, in the tragic results of the inadequate food system: a food system in which we all have an active role to play. If we foment healthy and sustainable food systems, yes we can reach the future we want.”

In her keynote speech, Peru's First Lady Nadine Heredia called for a broad strategy against hunger that included health, education and gender.

Noting that “842 million” human beings in the planet still lacked food, Heredia said “the figure continues to be overwhelming which also makes the food waste from the developing world even more unacceptable”.

She stressed that the most encouraging results were being achieved where agricultural, educational, nutritional, and productive infrastructure, programs as well as food for all ages and life stages programs were being put into action.

In a message for World Food Day, read by Archbishop Luigi Travaglino at the ceremony, Pope Francis said "It is a scandal that there is still hunger in the world."

He said that It was not only about responding to the immediate emergencies, “but to face together, in all fields, a problem that questions our own and the social conscience to achieve a just and lasting solution.”

World Food Day, commemorated in 150 countries, is also the anniversary of FAO's founding in 1945. This year's observance takes place under the shadow of new hunger figures that show a total of 842 million people are chronically undernourished.
