Storyline

The United Nations (UN) celebrated its 68th birthday today, acknowledging its work for human rights, the environment, armed conflict and so many other issues.

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon greeted UN staff, New Yorkers and tourists in Times Square as part of the celebrations around the world.

SOUNDBITE (English) Ban Ki-moon, Secretary-General, United Nations:
“During the last 68 years, the United Nations has always been at the front of many important events: crises, peace, development and human rights.”

A UN message played on the NASDAQ tower in Times Square, the multi-cultural hub of New York City.

James, a tour operator from Sierra Leone said he was happy the UN was involved in conflict resolution in his country.

UN staff handed out “Everyday Challenge” cards to the crowd.

The Day marks the anniversary of the entry into force in 1945 of the UN Charter which led to the establishment of the UN.
