“We have realized the level of commitment that the United Nations has to Somalia, to the new Somalia. The United Nations has been with Somalia, with the Somali people for over 20 years now. The UN was the guarantor and the protector of the Somali unity and sovereignty in the last 20 years. This is the time now, the Somali state is back, we are sovereign, recognized by the international community. We are standing for the protection and we are going to take over the responsibility and the burden from the UN. This is the time we stand here with the UN to move forward, to have a united and stable Somalia Insha Allah”

“What they want is to make us fearful and make us pull back and make us not achieve what we intended to do and that’s why we should paradoxically use this occasion and honor those who died by doing our job better than ever, in a unified way together with our Somali friends,”

UN Deputy-Secretary-General Jan Eliasson was inMogadishu,Somaliaover the weekend to assess the progress made and challenges faced in stabilizing the country following 22 years of conflict.
On Saturday(26 Oct),held discussions with Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamoud.
After the meeting, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamoud described Eliasson’s visit as yet another step that re-affirms the confidence that the UN has in Somalia.
He said, “we have realized the level of commitment that the United Nations has to Somalia, to the new Somalia. The United Nations has been with Somalia Somali people for over 20 years now. The UN was the guarantor and the protector of the Somali unity and sovereignty in the last 20 years.”
The president added that the time has come for Somalia to rise up to the challenge and take charge of its own institutions. He said, “this is the time now, the Somali state is back, we are sovereign, recognized by the international community.
We are standing for the protection and we are going to take over the responsibility and the burden from the UN. This is the time we stand here with the UN to move forward to have a united and stable Somalia, Insha Allah.”
Eliasson pledged continued support of the UN to the Somali government as the country embarks on rebuilding its infrastructure and institutions following decades of war.
Eliasson, who last visited Somalia in 1992, when he was USG for Humanitarian Affairs said that, “for me to be back here is a very important moment and the meetings that we have had today think show the solidarity that is felt from many parts of the world to Somalia’s government, the leadership and Parliament.
We hope very much that we will be able to contribute to increased security in the country both through the presence of international troops but also by strengthening the Somali National Army and Security Forces.”
