Storyline

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s Special Representative for the Democratic Republic of the Congo travelled to n Kiwanja from Goma on Monday (28 Oct) to officiate a memorial service for the Tanzanian soldier killed recently in Rutshuru.

Kiwanja is situated 70 km north of Goma, the capital of the North Kivu province of the DRC.

Martin Kobler, who is also the Head of the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) presided over the ceremony.

He paid tribute to the fallen soldier, Lt. Rajab Ahmed Mlima, who died in line of duty while fighting the M23 rebels. Several other soldiers were also injured in the fight.

The soldier from the Tanzanian Special Forces was part of the Intervention Force Brigade (IFB) that was formed to disarm armed groups in the North Kivu province.

Fighting between the Congolese army the FARDC and M23 rebels resumed last week in the area known as Kibumba, 20 km from Goma.

In recent days, the M23 rebels have lost key positions like Kibumba, Kiwanja, Rutshuru and Rumangabo.
