Storyline

The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) and the National Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration Commission on Monday handed over two new facilities - a Primary Health Care Center and a school - to the Tirrangore community in Eastern Equatoria State.

The facilities worth more than (USD)250,000 were funded by UNMISS through its disarmament, demobilization and reintegration projects.

The Chairman of the National DDR Commission, William Deng Deng, described the project as first of its kind. He said it was a significant boost to a community that had been shattered by war. And added that one way DDR can pay back the communities is to give them facilities like these -- schools, health centers

SOUNDBITE (English) William Deng Deng, Chairman of the National DDR Commission:
“DDR is about developing both human being and physical development, and one of the ways for us to pay communities is actually to give them facilities such as health center, schools and sometimes the police station and the building for administration.”

The acting head of UNMISS’ DDR Section, Mustpaha Tejan-Kellah told journalists that the two buildings would enhance service delivery to the community. He added that the project was also a way of encouraging the community to embrace and welcome ex-combatants back into society.

SOUDBITE (English) Mustpaha Tejan-Kellah UNMISS’ DDR officer:
“UNMISS has been here and will be here to support the DDR program. It is a national program and it is everywhere in their documents in South Sudan development plan, and the other program we are here to ensure that we deliver on that program because it is a pre-requisite peace and development in the country. Without peace there is no development.”

Elizabeth Victor from Tirrangore community said the new services would go a long way in dealing with problems related to education and healthcare in her community.

SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Elizabeth Victor from Tirrangore community:
