Storyline

Amid reports of heavy fighting near the border with Uganda, the United Nations Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, (MONUSCO) today (30 October) reported that the town of Bunagana, in North Kivu, is now fully controlled by the Congolese army.

Also in North Kivu, the Mission reports that hundreds of internally displaced people in Kanyaruchinya are leaving the area to return to the Kibumba area, north of Goma. They had fled during last week's fighting. The Mission is conducting regular patrols between the two areas in order to protect civilians.

On Monday, the Special Representative of the Secretary General in the DRC, and Head of MONUSCO, Martin Kobler along with the governor of the North Kivu province arrived in Rutshuru from Goma to meet the population and address them.

The SRSG assured the population of Rutshuru and Kiwanja of a restoration state authority and emphasized that the government of the DRCongo must take responsibility for progress in the area.

SOUNDBITE (French) Martin Kobler, Special Representative of the Secretary-General in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC):
"It is a day of liberation, and I’m also happy to see the governor is here. Our main objective now is to restore the state authority here in Kiwanja and Rutshuru."

This follows the liberation of Rutshuru and Kiwanja from the M23 rebels by the Congolese army (FARDC) with the support of the Force Intervention Brigade (FIB) in fierce fighting that saw one Tanzanian soldier of the FIB killed and several injured.

The FIB consists of troops from the Tanzania, South Africa and Malawi. FIB’s mandate is to disarm all the armed groups in North Kivu province.

Local residents, some clearly traumatized by the recent violence, expressed their gratitude to the liberating forces.

VOX-POP (Swahili) Resident of Kiwanja:

VOX-POP (Swahili) Resident of Kiwanja:

Before leaving the area by helicopter, Kobler explained the roles of MONUSCO and the Congolese government in the reestablishment of peace and development in the region.

SOUNDBITE (French) Martin Kobler, Special Representative of the Secretary-General in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC):
