Storyline

The International Criminal Court (ICC) on Wednesday ruled that former Ivorian president Laurent Gbagbo must remain in detention in The Hague pending a potential trial on charges of crimes against humanity.

The West African country was split by civil war in 2002. A 2010 presidential election, meant to be a culminating point in the peace process, resulted in months of violence when Mr. Gbagbo refused to step down after losing to Alassane Ouattara. Gbagbo finally surrendered the following April.

According to the United Nations, the post-election conflict killed at least 3,000 people.
