Storyline

Frightened faces in Paoua, northeast of the capital Bangui. In August, 2013 armed groups attacked their villages. Everyone fled. They have little but their clothes.

Now they must depend on the kindness of local residents, like Mathew Ndibe, a retired civil servant. He shelters 20 internally displaced people and feeds them with food from his garden.

SOUNDBITE (French) Mathiew Ndibe, Host Family, Paoua:
‘They’re human beings like me. They have nothing. As long as God gives me life, they will live with us. God has a plan for all of us. The little we have, we must share.’

In the conflict-torn Central African Republic, more than half the population need humanitarian assistance. So widespread is the violence that international organizations and NGOs can do little.

The IDPs are fearful and frustrated. Thimothy Ndiguidian lost contact with his family when he fled. He still waits to find them.

SOUNDBITE (Sango) Thimothy Ndiguidian, internally displaced, Paoua:
“We are tired. We’re always on the run. Now we want peace and our normal life back.”

Yapounanga Manuela is luckier. She has her children with her but the outlook is bleak.

SOUNDBITE (Sango) Yapounanga Manuela, internally displaced, Paoua:
“Life is very difficult for our family. We eat only once a day.”

Food. It’s basic and its preparation is watched hungrily. When it’s served, it’s devoured by hungry mouths of young and old. And the pot is scoured clean.
But there is not enough and even the generous hosts are being squeezed.

SOUNDBITE (Sango) Mandassio May, Mathiew’s wife, Host family, Paoua:
‘Since their arrival, we’ve had food problems. There are just too many and our budget can’t stretch that far.’

Food is only the start. These IDPs need shelter, and many need medical help.

SOUNDBITE (French) Mathiew Ndibe, Host Family, Paoua:
“People are born into trouble. These families will stay here. I can’t turn them away.”

So these lost people will stay. But their host hopes that soon the rest of the world will be able to step in to help them and him.
