The Head of United Nations Peacekeeping Operations Hervé Ladsous visited today (4 November) the town of Tessalit in northern Mali, where the UN peacekeepers from Chad are providing security to the population. Their living conditions are however very difficult in this impoverished region.

SOUNDBITE (French) Hervé Ladsous, United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations:
“I would like to tell you how proud of you I am. You are doing a remarkable work. You commitment is remarkable and on the occasion of my trip to Mali, I told myself that it was the perfect occasion to visit Tessalit and I was also glad to invite the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Chad to come with us.”

Ladsous paid tribute to fallen peacekeepers that were killed in Tessalit in several different incidents, including a suicide attack from last week.

Ladsous also met the local community leaders in Tessalit who expressed their gratitude for collaboration and protection.
