Storyline

Officials from the United Nations, Russia and the United States are holding talks in Geneva today (5 Nov), to try to pave the way for Geneva II, an international conference focused on ending the 31 month conflict in Syria.

Senior officials attending the meeting include UN-Arab League Joint Special Representative Lakhdar Brahimi, UN Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs Jeffrey Feltman, US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Wendy Sherman, and Russian Deputy Foreign Ministers Mikhail Bogdanov and Gennady Gatilov.

The meeting is set to be broadened later to include representatives of the three other permanent members of the UN Security Council, China, France and Britain, and then later in the day by representatives of Syria's neighbours, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey, as well as of the UN and the Arab League.

The Syrian government and opposition groups disagree over how the formal negotiations for Geneva II should be structured: the opposition demands that President Bashar al-Assad should resign, while Damascus says there should be no pre-conditions.
