“The Mongolian second battalion infantry conducted many patrols in their area of responsibility. These patrols have been successfully implemented in preventing a number of cattle raids, inter tribal fighting’s and other criminal activities from taking place. Just by having them here many lives have been saved, and that is truly worth it. In addition to their usual tasks as peacekeepers and UN militants.”

Storyline

The United Nations Under-Secretary-General for the Department of Field Support Ameerah Haq visited Unity State and met with Deputy-Governor Mabek Lang De Madding who briefed her on the political and security situation in the State.

Speaking after her visit, to she said she was encouraged by the State’s government commitment to development.

SOUNDBITE(English) Ameerah Haq, Under-Secretary- General for the Department of Field Support:
“For me it is very encouraging to meet with the Deputy Governor and all the members of the cabinet and to see how they committed they are to build the nation and how committed they are to make sure that the nation’s institutions stand on the right foundation. Haq also visited the headquarters of the 2nd Mongolian Battalion of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), where she attended a Medal Parade for Mongolian peace-keepers who were decorated in appreciation of their work to support the people and authorities of Unity State.

The 2nd Mongolian Battalion is due to rotate in a week and will be replaced by the 3rd Mongolian Battalion, with a force-strength of 850 men and women.

Mongolian engineers started assisting local authorities as early as June, when the Governor requested their support to address the damage caused by seasonal heavy rains. The engineers have undertaken infrastructure work such as levelling and building drainage along Bentiu’s main road, constructing dykes or draining and rehabilitating the public sports complex of Bentiu so it could host the independence celebrations in July – just to name a few of their projects.

By working together and supporting the State Government, the local authorities and the citizens of the State, the Mongolian Battalion and UNMISS are striving to help extend state authority, prevent conflicts, protect civilians and consolidate the peace so the people can build a strong economy and a fairer society, where every child in every part of this state can succeed and achieve his or her dreams said USG Haq about her travel to Bentiu.
