Storyline

The World Food Programme (WFP) started helicopter flights to delivery high energy biscuits to islands in the outlying areas of Philippines namely to communities of Guiuan, Eastern Samar, and other parts of Leyte.

WFP and the Department of Social Welfare and Development DSWD also distributed High Energy Biscuits (HEBs) to 5,000 people at Tacloban airport on Thursday (14 November.)

SOUNDBITE (English) Silke Buhr, WFP Spokesperson:
"The World Food Programme is continuing with aid distribution in the areas affected by typhoon Haiyan. Today helicopter flights took place to delivery high energy biscuits to islands in the outlying areas and there were distribution of high energy biscuits also at Tacloban airport where hundreds of hundreds of people have been waiting to leave the affected areas for several days."

WFP is working with the Philippines government to bring in food and other relief items by air, road and sea. But the logistics are challenging.

The rice rations from WFP have now reached more than 170,000 people. The rice is being distributed by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) as part of family food packs.

WFP is seeking a total of US$101 million to provide emergency food assistance to more than two million people as well as logistics, and emergency telecommunications support to the whole humanitarian community.
