Storyline

In Talcoban, one of the hardest hit areas by typhoon Haiyan, virtually nothing is left standing. Large areas have been flattened. Debris is everywhere, with human bodies still buried underneath. The stench of death is pervasive.

Life however goes on and survivors in Tacloban are scrambling to provide for themselves and their families as best as they can – building shelters from debris and lining up at the food distribution centers.

The number of people affected by Typhoon is now estimated at 13 million, including some 3 million displaced.

Elena Ada Catindoy fled her village before the storm and found shelter in in a near-by church.

Her husband and son stayed back to protect the coconut shells they collect and sell
to make a living. When the storm hit, her husband told his son to go to the shelter, but he stayed back.

He was hurt by falling debris and died a few days later.

“The water was rising in San Roque and my husband tried to swim just to save himself. He told his son - just leave me alone because you still have lot of children to take care I have to stay here. When his son left him and water rose he was trying to save himself but unfortunately there was lots of debris hitting him, so he got lots of wounds and bruises.

UNHCR is distributing emergency relief items in and around Tacloban. Estimates are that so far they have reached 15,000 people. Getting aid to the most affected is a logistical challenge involving planes, trucks and ferries.

Evelyn Quisaba, returned to find her coastal home completely destroyed. Now she is living beside the ruins of their house. Her makeshift shelter now accommodates 4 families with 15 souls.

Plastic tarp gives them some protection them from the rains, for what Evelyn is grateful:
“Even though we built the shelter with a piece of steel, the water still leaks when it rains. So I asked for plastic sheet so the water will stop dripping and we can sleep better. This is what we really need, I think this is the most important thing for my family now so we can have a good sleep.”

Some families have left for the capital Manila to earn money to be able to rebuild. Others are being helped with donations. But the future seems very uncertain. Elena who mourns her husband also feels vulnerable:
“For now I'm ok, because there are a lot of donations but in the coming days I worry these people who help may leave. I’m afraid I will receive nothing to eat and my children don't have work so there will be nothing left.”

Residents talk about feeling traumatised and worried when they hear the waves. A feeling that will linger for a long time to come.

The UN has created two hubs in the east and west of the main island, in Ormoc (Leyte Province) and Guiuan (Eastern Samar Province), both areas seriously affected by the typhoon.

The UN Emergency Relief Coordinator Valerie Amos requests airlifts for more relief supplies, UNHCR has increased its total requirements to USD 15 million.
