In a press conference at the end of his presidency of the Security Council for the month of November, ambassador Liu Jieyi of China said that without international efforts the success of Geneva II Conference will be difficult.
Asked about the participation of Iran and Saudi Arabia, he noted that “it is also highly important to highlight the role of the regional player” and that “they must play a very constructive role.”
He added that “the more regional players get involved in this constructive process, the better.”
The Chinese ambassador underlined that all the parties in Syria should move forward on the political negotiations track and should place above everything else the future of the country and the future of the people, which are at stake.
On Monday, Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon, announced that the Geneva conference on Syria, known as “Geneva II”, would take place on January 22, 2014.
The goal of Geneva II would be to achieve a political solution to the conflict through a comprehensive agreement between the Government and the opposition for the full implementation of the Geneva communiqué, adopted after the first international meeting on the issue on 30 June 2012.
The communiqué, which has been endorsed by the UN Security Council, lays out key steps in a process to end the violence. Among these, the establishment - based on mutual consent - of a transitional governing body with full executive powers, including over military and security entities.
