The 17th International Conference on AIDS and Sexually Transmitted Infections in Africa (ICASA) is taking place in Cape Town, South Africa and is due to close tomorrow, 11 December. The largest AIDS conference in Africa took place as the country mourned and celebrated Nelson Mandela, a passionate AIDS advocate
The conference theme is “Now More Than Ever: Targeting Zero”,derived from the UNAIDS’ “Zero new HIV infections. Zero discrimination. Zero AIDS-related deaths”. It also highlights the need to “now more than ever” maintain the commitment to ensure access to treatment for everyone in Africa.
UNAIDS Goodwill Ambassador Annie Lennox called upon African leaders to take concrete action.
“It is time for leaders across the African continent and leaders everywhere to commit to taking concrete action to stop violence against women and children by implementing the policies which effect change.”
She also paid tribute to late South African President Nelson Mandela. - “We have come a long way and we can be truly proud of what's been achieved so far. We owe it to Mandela to ensure that this dream is ultimately realized and fulfilled.”
Michel Sidibé, UNAIDS Executive Director quoted Mandela saying: “One cannot be prepared for something while secretly believing that it will not happen”.
He also stated that ending AIDS by 2030 is not only possible but within the reach. – “Together let us make it happen and let us make it the legacy of Mandela.” – he added.
Organizers also want to bring world’s attention to the fact that the fight against AIDS is now under threat as a result of the global economic downturn. This year’s ICASA is an opportunity for the international community, and all Africans, to join efforts in committing to achieving an AIDS-free Africa.
