Storyline

As fighting in Syria continues, the World Food Programme (WFP) is appealing for close to US$2 billion to assist over 7 million Syrians in urgent need of food assistance in 2014.

Here in Damascus, Syrian Arab Red Crescent (SARC) and local communities are working together to provide hot meals to displaced families with WFP food rations of rice, oil, salt, lentils, pasta, pulses, burglar.

In Adra, fighting has intenseifeid and humanitarian aid workers can no longer access displaced populations.

WFP provides food to internally displaced families at this shelter in Al Tal village, which is now home to 1,000 people, mainly women, children and elderly from Eastern Ghouta and other parts of Rural Damascus. All families in this shelter have been displaced more than three times.

Despite significant challenges, the food agency has gained access over the last few weeks to 9 difficult to reach areas in November and December mainly in rural Homs, Deraa, and Idleb.

WFP is concerned that up to 6.5 million people inside Syria might be severely food insecure and would require external food assistance to survive. The UN food agency is coordinating with other partners and agencies to ensure the urgent food needs of the displaced Syrians are met.
