Storyline

More than 830,000 Syrian refugees have been registered or are waiting to be registered in Lebanon, thus making this Middle Eastern country a host to the highest number of Syrian refugees in the region.

But unlike its neighbors, Lebanon has no established camps. Many refugees live in makeshift shelters, which are particularly vulnerable in winter months.

In Bebnine in the north Lebanon, an informal settlement had sprung up four months ago. Some 90 Syrians live here now.

Saed has arrived here from Syria only weeks ago and had to borrow money to build his home – finishing just before his daughter was born.

Now, he is helping to put the foundations for a new home for recently arrived relatives.

"We are worried. We need to make sure people are fine, to make sure the water doesn't enter the houses, and to keep the children warm and this is what we are worried about, we want to live like anyone else, to be able to eat and drink and blankets for the kids."-explained Saed.

He is one of many Syrian refugees who cannot afford to pay rent and have no option but to live in shelters like these. In this area of North Lebanon, informal tent settlements have doubled in the last three months.

As part of its Winterization programme, UNHCR and its partners are distributing emergency shelter kits along with blankets, stoves and vouchers for fuel.

Samar Finianos of NGO Concern is helping distribution of aid in Bebnine.

" Yesterday as the part of winterization programme we distributed sealing off kits to these families, and today we are districting one stove for each family and two blankets for each individual, under the UNHCR fund."- said Finianos.

The United Nations has launched an appeal for $6.5 billion, the largest the UN has asked for a single crisis.

The funds would provide food, water, shelter and health services to both Syrians inside Syria and those who have found the refuge in neighboring countries.
