"On Friday morning the wind started and it was so strong. We were scared. It was like a demon going out of control.” We don’t know what the plan is for the future. We don’t know where we will live. We don’t know where we will get food.”

When Typhoon Hayan struck Philippines, 15 million people have been affected and about 4 million remain displaced. Tens of thousands are still living in evacuation centers - schools, churches and other public buildings.
Dennie Monteroso, her husband and her six children are living in what used to be their daughter Karen's elementary school.
"We sleep in the floor, Here on the chairs. The boys are outside."- she said.
They are sharing one classroom with 21 other families, 80 people in total. Little Karen likes drawing pictures of their destroyed house.
Every day, she and her siblings spent time in the UNICEF Child Friendly Space giving her mother and father time to figure out their next steps.
"I need to build a house where I can live with all my six children."-explained Monteroso.
Lucila Tumalon and her family came to Astrodome, the nickname for the Tacloban Convention Center.
Lucila remembered the storm: "On Friday morning the wind started, it was so strong. We were scared. It was like a demon going out of control.”
Now, they are faced with new challenges.
“We don’t know what the plan is for the future. We don’t know where we will live. We don’t know where we will get food. We don’t know how long the relief will last.”-explained Lucila.
Michelle Tanawan and her family found shelter at Redemptorist Church.

Today there are signs of recovery in Tacloban. From the rubble, people are rising up, streets are being cleared.
Local government, NGOs, and humanitarian groups like UNICEF are coming together to bring aid to people like Dennie, Lucila and Michelle who are working hard to rebuild their lives.
