5000 civilians have sought shelter and protection at the UNMISS Compound in Bentui, the regional capitol of oil rich Unity State in South Sudan. The increased skirmishes between Government forces and rebels threaten the lives of people in the region.
UNMISS Acting Spokesperson Joseph Contreras spoke of what UNMISS was doing to help civilians in that area.
“UNMISS is continuing to provide shelter and medical treatment to an estimated 5000 civilians who have gathered inside the UNMISS compound north of the Unity State Capital of Bentui. Our resources are stretched very very tightly but we are continuing to stand by the people of Unity State. The Mission has a collective resolve to remain in South Sudan and will not be intimidated and will continue to fulfill its mandate to protect civilians.”
The UN has evacuated all non-essential staff from the camp because of the on-going fighting.
“On Saturday all remaining civilian staff were indeed relocated from Bor to the national capital of Juba and plans are underway to relocate all non-critical civilian staff from the Unity State capital. I believe those operations will take place later on Sunday”-explained Contreras.
The fighting is increasing in Unity State since both the Government Forces and the Anti-Government forces wrestle to control this oil rich region.
