Storyline

Nearly 1500 South Sudanese people sheltering inside the United Nations compound in capitol Juba gathered to celebrate a Christmas Mass in the IDP Camp which they have come to call home for the past week.

They celebrated by singing and dancing as if they were in their own Church.

Analia Ramos of UNMISS took it upon herself to help to organize this. She said that many members of her local church were in the IDP Camp and she wanted to make sure they did not feel left out.

“We actually got the permission to celebrate Mass last Sunday and organize a Christmas service, and the people are so happy and so grateful. For them it is so important and obviously….the situation in the camp they cannot go outside to church where they normally attend so then we had to come and bring the priest here and the sisters and they have been very happy with that.”

Father Louis Tony Okot of the Comboni Missionarys brought the Christmas message to the people on the theme “Brotherly Love”. He told the worshippers to forgive their brother who may have wrong them as it is what God wants.

Some 30000 civilians had found a refuge in UN camps across South Sudan following fighting between government army and rebel groups.
