Storyline

An Australian military aircraft, carrying some 30 000 kg of engineering equipment has arrived in Juba, South Sudan.

Equipment will help strengthen defense perimeter around UN compounds across the country that currently provide shelter for some 60 000 civilians.

The equipment is ferried from UN logistic base in Brindisi in Italy and this is already a second flight for the Royal Australian military transport plane C17 on the route from Brindisi to Juba.

The spokesperson for the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) Joseph Contreras said there are more flights to come.

“This is the second of a planned 8 supply flights using this Royal Australian Transport plane. They are operating out of the Global Support base of the United Nations in Brindisi Italy and this is a tremendous assistance and support for an already overstretched Peacekeeping Mission.”

The fighting between the warring parties has intensified in last couple days as both government forces as well as rebels are maneuvering for more favorable strategic positions as peace talks are about to start.
