“We can see clearly that an act of paying homage to such a place housing the symbols of class A war criminals and other war criminals as a blatant affront to the international justice, a blatant affront to human conscience and a blatant affront to the post Second World War to international order, based on the victory against fascist aggressors in the Second World War and also based on the very principles and purposes of the United Nations Charter”

6. SOUNDBITE (English) ambassador Liu Jieyi of China:
“To pay homage to such a place, where war criminals are enshrined is a fundamental question bearing on the Charter of the United Nations. It is a dangerous distortion of right and wrong. It is a dangerous distortion of what is aggression and what is peace-loving. It is also a stand on the wrong side of history.”

8. SOUNDBITE (English) ambassador Liu Jieyi of China:
“The victory of the Second World War against fascist and the post war international order has been achieved at the cost of millions of lives. The international community should remain vigilant and issue a warning. A warning to the effect that [Prime Minister Shinzo] Abe must correct his erroneous outlook of history. He must correct his mistakes.”

Ambassador Liu Jieyi of China condemned the recent visit of the Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to the Yasukuni Shrine, which he described as “a place that whitewashes and glorifies aggression” and as “the incarnation of militarism of Japan”.
Speaking today (8 Jan) to reporters outside the Security Council, the Chinese ambassador said that “paying homage to such a place housing the symbol class A war criminals and other war criminals as a blatant affront to the international justice, a blatant affront to human conscience and a blatant affront to the post Second World War to international order, based on the victory against fascist aggressors in the Second World War and also based on the very principles and purposes of the United Nations Charter”.
He added that to pay homage to a place, where war criminals are enshrined, “is a dangerous distortion of right and wrong. It is a dangerous distortion of what is aggression and what is peace-loving” and also “a stand on the wrong side of history.”
Finally, the Chinese diplomat noted “the victory of the Second World War against fascist and the post war international order has been achieved at the cost of millions of lives.”
Liu stressed that “the international community should remain vigilant and issue a warning.”
“A warning”-he explained- “to the effect that [Prime Minister Shinzo] Abe must correct his erroneous outlook of history. He must correct his mistakes.”
The Yasukuni Shrine, located in Chiyoda, Tokyo, currently includes the remains of 2.5 million people who died in conflicts spanning from the 19th Century to World War II, but hundreds of convicted WWII criminals are also enshrined there.
Fourteen so-called Class A criminals –those who were involved in planning the war- are among those honoured.
