Head of the United Nations mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) Hilde Johnson travelled to the city of Malakal, the capitol of the Upper Nile State on Wednesday (8 Jan) where she met with families displaced by the ongoing violence between pro- and anti-government forces.
Instability, fighting and mobilization of armed forces continues in a number of locations, including the area around Bor in Jonglei State and in Unity and Upper Nile States.
Johnson visited an IDP (Internally Displaced People)camp on the UNMISS base currently hosting more than 12,000 people, including civilians receiving medical treatment in the UN clinic on the base.
“It’s very important for me as the SRSG to go to the field to both see for myself the impact of the crisis, meet with Government Officials, as well as the team that has now been operating under a major crisis for the past three weeks.”- said Johnson.
Meanwhile, the UN mission was finally able to undertake three flights to Malakal to deliver food supplies, as well as medically evacuate 54 civilians back to Juba.
The UN flights had been unable to reach the area for the past few days, putting additional strain on UN medical facilities here already overwhelmed with the number of patients.
SOUNDBITE (English) Hilde F. Johnson, Special Representative to the Secretary General:
“Out of 186 patients that came with gunshot wounds in the 4 days that they were under fire literally speaking actually only one child died. All the others were saved.”
Food, healthcare, shelter, water, sanitation and hygiene remain the top priorities for humanitarian response for those displaced.
Aid agencies have also begun contingency planning for any potential additional displacement in the coming weeks, and for the rainy season, which is due to start in May.
According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), an estimated 201,000 people have been internally displaced since 15 December when the fighting began.
