Storyline

Since Sunday, the Syrian-Iraqi border at Peshkhabour has re-opened for a few hours a day. Since then, just over 4,500 Syrians have crossed over by barge. The border had been closed since mid-September in the wake of an exodus of some 60,000 Syrians in mid-August last year.

The pontoon bridge that saw thousands of refugees cross to Iraq is no longer in use, forcing people to make a 20 minute journey over the river by barge.

Not all of those making a journey will stay in Iraq – some will just pick up supplies and then return to Syria.

Those who stay will be taken to the Gawilan refugee camp located between Erbil and Dohuk or will join their families already in Iraq.

Currently, Iraq hosts 210,000 registered Syrian refugees.
