Storyline

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said today (13 Jan) he was concerned by the deteriorating security in parts of Iraq and called on leaders to provide Iraqis with “tangible benefits and a better future”.

Speaking to reporters in Baghdad alongside Prime Minister Nouri Al-Maliki, Ban condemned what he called the “terrible attacks” that have recently targeted the people of Iraq and expressed his deep sadness by the “senseless deaths of innocent Iraqi women, children and men”.

On Sunday, a car bomb exploded in Baghdad killing at least nine people.

Ban noted that “the challenges facing Iraq require all political leaders to fulfill their responsibilities to ensure social cohesion, dialogue and progress over political obstacles”.

Major offensives have also recently been launched by Al-Qaida associated militants in Ramadi and Fallujah.

Last Friday, the Security Council in New York strongly deplored ongoing clashes in the cities of Ramadi and Fallujah in Anbar province, condemning attacks being carried out by Al-Qaida-linked militants and stressing the critical importance of continued national dialogue and unity.

Tomorrow, the Secretary-General will travel to Kuwait City, in advance of the Second High-Level Humanitarian Pledging Conference for Syria, which he will chair on Wednesday.
