“After the killing of my husband, I spent 3 days without seeing my children, I did not know where they were, but a UNMISS staff brought me here and later on I was reunited with my children.”

According to a UNICEF report from 5 January, 210 separated or unaccompanied children had been identified in UN camps in Juba. While most of them have been reunited with their families the report noted that there were 87 cases of missing children.

The UN mission (UNMISS), UNICEF and the non-governmental organization, “Non-Violent Peace Force” are working together to respond to different child protection challenges.

SOUNDBITE (English) Bado Datar, UNMISS Child Protection Officer:
“We are also involved in reunification of the children separated from their families, on family tracing we work closely with different partners on the ground the NGO’s and other humanitarian actors.”

UNMISS and UNICEF also organized an advocacy programme this week to raise awareness on issues of recruiting children into armed forces and reporting on grave child rights violations.
