Malakal, the capital city of oil-rich Upper Nile State, was recaptured from the rebels after violent clashes on Monday (20 Jan). Thousands of civilians however, remain homeless, and in need of assistance.
The UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) now hosts some 27,000 people – mostly women and children in its Malakal base offering shelter, food and medical assistance to those in need.
Rosa James, a displaced mother of four, came to the UN clinic with her one-month old baby.
“Some men were fighting in the camp and one of them hit the baby on the chest and we altogether fell down. My baby is in pain and didn’t sleep last night.”- explained James.
The UNMISS Level One Clinic was originally set to look after no more but 25 adult patients per day. Now, the clinic provide health care to more than 250 patients daily including children, said Dr. Meroni Abraham.
“We are seeing more than two hundred and fifty cases a day and during such period, resources are difficult. So we are trying our best to put up our request to the medical section in Juba, we are trying to use what resources we have in the clinic efficiently but still we are having problems with pediatrics drugs” – said Abraham.
Tapagan Amum Padiet got wounded in leg, while fleeing fighting in the town. Fortunately, she was able to walk to the UN Protection area and is now receiving treatment at the UN clinic.
“What happened is that, I was shot on my thigh on Tuesday at home when we were running for our lives to take protection in UN. The forces fought and at cross fire I was injured.”
Overall, UNMISS is sheltering more than 70,000 civilians in total of eight of the mission’s bases since conflict erupted between President Salva Kiir’s forces and those of former deputy president Riek Machar on 15 December.
