A United Nations mission (UNMISS) delegation lead by Deputy Chief Raisedon Zenenga travelled to Bentiu over the weekend. Storyline

A United Nations mission (UNMISS)delegation lead by Deputy Chief Raisedon Zenenga travelled to Bentiu over the weekend. The town was recaptured by government forces on January 9 after more than three weeks of fierce fighting with anti–government forces loyal to former Vice-President Riek Machar.

Zenenga and the 13-member UNMISS delegation visited the IDP camp inside the Mission’s compound that housed 10,000 people at the peak of the conflict in the Unity State. Currently, there are 2,500 civilians here.

Women were holding white flags aimed at promoting an open a dialogue among Unity State’s various ethnic communities.

Forty-year-old mother of nine, Aluel Wal Magor, was amond them.

“We are women of peace what had happen in south Sudan we totally disagree with it and we are calling on every south Sudanese holding weapon there to put down their weapons and make peace so that our children can return to their residents” – said Magor.

Zenenga welcomed the peace initiative and discussed the signing of a cessation of hostilities agreement in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, by representatives of President Salva Kiir Mayardit and former Vice-President Riek Machar Teny.

“And when fighting stops, there will be no more deaths and we can now begin the process of creating an environment that allows everybody to return home, to reconcile and to start re-building.” – said Zenenga.

Civilians fled when word spread that the government was planning to retake Benitu, Dozens of homes and businesses were razed to the ground when anti-government forces withdrew from the Unity State capital.
