Storyline

During here three-day visit to South Sudan, United Nations Emergency Relief Coordinator Valerie Amos witnessed devastation in the town of Malakal following fierce fighting which began last month.

She visited a teaching hospital where she said the displaced were living, “in unbelievably dire circumstances.” The hospital has only half of the drugs needed to keep treating the wounded. There are some 700 patients and displaced sheltering in and around the hospital.

It left a deep impression on Amos.

SOUNDBITE(English) Valerie Amos, United Nations Under Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs:
“The first thing I was struck by was the absolute devastation in the town the way that whole areas of the town had been burnt out, the market area completely destroyed and then to visit teaching hospital and see the thousands of people taking shelter there and the unbelievably dare circumstances.”

She also saw firsthand the WFP (World Food Program) warehouse that was completely looted and vandalized. This has happened in many other locations throughout the country during the conflict between pro-and anti-government forces, which began last month.

SOUNDBITE (English) Chris Nikoi, World Food Program (WFP) Country Director:
“What we can be able to a confirm so far is we have lost enough food to feed over two hundred thousand people for a month so far, that we have verified.”

WFP is now airlifting food from the capital Juba to Malakal.

She also vistied the UNMISS bases, where an estimated 27,000 people are taking shelter.

Amos praised the role played by humanitarian agencies in supporting IDPs Intenally Displaced People), urging them to double their efforts in serving the vulnerable.

Asked what needed to be done to get people back into their homes, the humanitarian chief said it was necessary to guarantee their security, but noted this might not be enough.
