Speaking to reporters, Martin Nesirky said that the fighting appeared to have subsided since the afternoon although it continued to report sounds of gunfire and mortars; adding that the Mission was providing medical treatment to a number of wounded combatants as well as civilians within the base.
He noted that over the weekend, the Mission also received reports of fighting between SPLA and opposition forces east of Malakal in Baliet County.
Nesirky stressed that the UN Mission was deeply concerned about the fighting and reiterated the necessity for parties to fully implement the Agreements on Cessation of Hostilities and Status of Detainees.
He explained that the parties must cooperate fully with the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) Monitoring and Verification Mechanism, which the United Nations is supporting.
Overall, the UN Mission is protecting 75,000 civilians in a number of bases around the country, including some 22,000 civilians in Malakal.
On Monday (17 Feb), a cargo plane chartered by the International Organization for Migrations (IOM) crashed at the Rubkona airport in Bentiu killing one member of the crew.
The other three members of the crew were injured and evacuated by UNMISS to Malakal.
The plane razed two WFP vehicles parked at the side of the airstrip and crash-landed outside the airport perimeter 10 meters away from the fuel storage.
This fatal crash was the 28th mercy flight since the International Organization for Migration (IOM) began its air operation on January 31.
Since then, IOM chartered cargo planes have delivered over 150 tons of emergency relief supplies to thousands of displaced people in parts of South Sudan most seriously affected by the country's ongoing crisis, including the towns of Malakal, Bor and Bentiu.
According to IOM, the flight was carrying drinking water, hygiene, sanitation equipment, medicine and shelter materials to over 3,200 internally displaced people at the U.N. base in Bentiu.
