“The Relief and Works Agency’s Commissioner General, Filippo Grandi, visited Yarmouk today and a small amount of food was distributed. You’ll recall that the Security Council voted unanimously to adopt Resolution 2183 on Saturday morning. The Secretary-General said after the passage of the resolution that, if it is implemented quickly and in good faith, at least some of the suffering can be eased. But he added that this resolution should not have been necessary. Humanitarian assistance is not something to be negotiated; it is something to be allowed by virtue of international law.”

Storyline

The UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) is trying to get aid into Yarmouk camp in Syria following the adoption of a Security Council Resolution that called for improved humanitarian access in Syria.

Speaking to reporters, UN spokesperson Martin Nesirky said that UNRWA’s Commissioner General, Filippo Grandi, visited Yarmouk today (24 Feb) and a small amount of food was distributed.

On Saturday morning (22 Feb), the Security Council voted unanimously to adopt a resolution that demands cross-border access to facilitate aid delivery and threatens to take “further steps” in the case of non-compliance.

Nesirky noted that the Secretary-General said after the passage of the resolution that, if it is implemented quickly and in good faith, at least some of the suffering can be eased; adding that the resolution should not have been necessary.

Ban Ki-moon also stressed that humanitarian assistance is not something to be negotiated; it is something to be allowed by virtue of international law.

Syria has been at civil war for the past three years during which time more than 100,000 people have been killed.

The UN says that more than 9 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance.
