The United Nations (UN) will send a delegation from New York to Rumbek, South Sudan midweek to investigate reports that government troops found weapons in a number of UN convoys marked as food.
Weapons transported by road are in violation of an agreement the UN has with the government, which states that during crisis, weapons may only be transported by air. The U.N. called the incident, “regrettable.”
UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said the investigation will be launched immediately, “to understand the circumstances behind this incident,” adding that the UN mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) said it was, “important to wait for the facts to come out and respect all provisions of the Status of Forces Agreement signed between the UN and the Government of South Sudan.”
Troops from the Ghanian Battalion (GHANBAT) are from ONOCI (United Nations Operation in Cote d’Ivoire) and were sent to South Sudan to reinforce the UNMISS military component .
The GHANBAT unit will be stationed in Bentui the Oil Rich state of south Sudan which has been a point of contention for the warring factions.
The troops joined the mission in line with a Security Council resolution in December to increase the mission’s military component to make a total force of 12,500 troops.
