Storyline

In an ongoing military operation African Union troops in Somalia known as AMISOM and Somali National Army have liberated town of Buula Burde from al Shabaab militia. This is a sixth such victory in South Central Somalia.

The al Shabaab fighters had earlier fled the town without putting up much resistance but later regrouped and launched attacks under the cover of darkness. They were repelled by SNA and AMISOM forces and suffered significant losses during the assault.

Earlier this month Somali Army and the AMISOM have lunched an offensive to throw out the al Shabaab extremists from the different parts of Somalia they still occupy.

Buula Burde was an al Shabaab stronghold and its capture comes as a major victory for the troops fighting to keep peace in the country.

The residents and elders in Bula Burde welcomed the troops which they say have saved them from the tyranny of the al Shabaab group.

The Village chief of elders Mohamed Halane Hurow said the extremists had brought untold suffering on to the population.

“Those people took over this town and brought a lot of troubles to the city and the residents. The all-mighty Allah has today removed them from upon us. We want to thank the soldiers for liberating us. They didn’t want any of us to have a good life; they robbed people of their lives day and night.” – said Hurow.

Speaking after the capture of the town, AMISOM’s Chief of staff Gen. Osman-Noor Soubagleh said the operation also saved a number of youths that had been lined up for killing by the al Shabaab.

“We were welcomed by the population. We did not only liberate the area, the city but also there are several youths who were tried by the courts of al Shabaab to be beheaded in the coming days. We also liberated these guys. So the population warmly welcomed us and they are expecting from us and from AMISOM to liberate the rest of the districts which are under the control of the al Shabaab extremists,” - he said.

The other towns that have been captured so far are Hudur, Rabdhure, Ted, Weel dheyn and Burdhubow in the Gedo, Bay and Bakool regions.
